5 for Friday – Gargoyles of Notre Dame

IMG_3083-0.JPG

One of my favourite things to do in Paris and certainly something that I would recommend to anyone that has the time (to queue) and energy, is to climb the tower at Notre Dame Cathedral.

When I’m travelling, I have a compulsion to get to the top of any tall structure that is open to tourists as this is usually the place you’ll get the best bird’s eye view (and photos) of the city or town that you’re in. And the view from the Notre Dame tower is one of the best! I mean just look at it!

These rows of cute little chimney pots? That’s quintessential Paris for you. Right there.

And you know what? That’s not even the good side! Arguably the best view in town belongs to those stone guardians of Notre Dame, the gargoyles. Not only is it fun to get up close and personal with them, they also make great subjects, making your Paris landscape photos that much more interesting.

While I didn’t meet Quasimodo or Esmerelda while I was up there, here are 5 friends I made at the top of the Notre Dame tower.

OK, I realise that last photo was 2 for the price of 1. It didn’t look very good when I cropped out the bird, so figured I’d leave those 2 together.

As you approach the main entrance of the cathedral, the queue for the tower is on the left hand side. Remember it is a separate queue to the queue to get inside the cathedral.

You can gain access to the tower with your Paris Museum Pass. If you don’t have one, be prepared to pay a small fee (entering the main cathedral itself is free).

Which gargoyle do you like best? Where else would you recommend going to for amazing views of Paris?
