Bagpiper, Edinburgh, Scotland
Scotland, like Wales and Ireland, is blessed with captivating rugged landscapes, mysterious ruins and castles, and friendly people with musical accents. In addition, Edinburgh is also the place where JK Rowling wrote much of her earlier Harry Potter novels, in the Elephant House cafe overlooking the castle, as well as where she completed the last tome in the Balmoral Hotel. For these reasons, Scotland holds a spot in my heart.
Dala horses, Dalarna region of Sweden
I love all of Scandinavia, from Iceland with its waterfalls and people who believe in fairy folk, to Norway with its amazing coastline, rustic Finland, and Sweden, home to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, in my opinion – Stockholm. Denmark doesn’t get a mention only because I was 4 when I went there with my family and all I can remember is the ice-cream! It’s definitely on my bucket list though. I’m not sure what the significance of the Dala horses are in Sweden, but I thought they were cute. They come in a range of colours, but the most common and popular is red.
Parliament building, Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is another favourite city of mine. Actually 2 cities built on either side of the Danube River, the views are equally stunning whether you’re standing at Fisherman’s Bastion looking over at Parliament or vice versa. With spas and opulent cafés serving decadent treats, there are also many opportunities to spoil yourself while still spending relatively little compared to elsewhere in Europe.
Strawberry Fields, Central Park, New York
The most fun and exciting thing about New York is that so much of the place is recognisable through the movies and TV shows we’ve all watched. I felt like I’d been there before, even on my first visit! When you need a break from the hustle and bustle, make a beeline for Central Park. You’ll still find plenty of people around, but it’s nevertheless a great place for some peace and relaxation.
Ballooning over Cappadocia, Turkey
Turkey should be on everybody’s bucket list. There’s so much history there, from the ancient world to more modern times. The sights and landscapes are similarly varied, from turquoise waters by the coast to this surreal landscape of Cappadocia. Hot air ballooning over it is an experience you’ll never forget!
Do you know the significance of the Dala horses? Which side of Budapest do you prefer? Do you have photos of other red icons you’d like to share?
