8 ways to score a flight upgrade | skyscanner.com.au

Some time last year, I made some suggestions on how to score a flight upgrade.

As you can imagine, I was most curious to see how my suggestions would compare to those from a REAL travel website.

In actual fact, I really wasn’t far off!

My top tip of BEING LOYAL to the one airline is exactly in line with Skyscanner’s recommendation to “be a frequent flyer”. And really, all the other tips that follow are secondary only to this suggestion. Simply put, airlines are most likely to reward those who have been loyal to them.

Another suggestion of mine, DRESSING THE PART, is also mentioned in Skyscanner’s article as a way of scoring that elusive upgrade.

And my advice to JUST ASK is expounded upon in Skyscanner’s recommendations to “be nice” and “mention an important occasion”.

Whilst I had neglected to mention it myself, I can also personally attest to the truth of Skyscanner’s suggestions of “travelling alone” and “at the right time”. Everyone I’ve ever known who has received a flight upgrade has either travelled alone or with only 1 other adult companion. Sorry to families and especially families with kids!

Finally, the time I have been most fortunate, receiving upgrades on 4 out of my 5 flights between Australia, Dubai and Europe was during the peak Christmas/New Year period, when the economy cabins were fully booked and they were looking to move a few people into the business class cabin. Why was I so lucky to be selected out of all those people to receive the upgrades? Precisely because of my loyalty to Qantas and Emirates, my preference of dressing presentably, and because my travelling companion was also an appropriately attired responsible looking adult.

Anyway, do take a look at Skyscanner’s handy guide to increase your chances of getting an upgrade on a plane, and let me know what you think!
